Student Spotlight: Michael P. Lathan, Jr., Network+ and Security+, Code Black Tech

Spotlight: Michael P. Lathan, Jr. – Code Black Tech Student

GreenLexi had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Lathan Jr., a student enrolled in both the Network+ and Security+ courses through Code Black Tech. Michael also serves as a Student Advisor. We always like to start out by asking how students hear about Code Black Tech courses. Let's get started.

Michael first heard about the program through his sister-in-law, who is connected to one of the instructors.

Currently employed in the tech field, Michael explained how both courses directly strengthen his role. With Network+, Michael enjoys mastering the foundational concepts behind how data moves, subnetting, protocols, cabling, and troubleshooting. The hands-on labs and visual breakdowns help Michael to connect theory to practical skills used in current and future roles, while Security+ deepens his understanding of modern threat landscapes, identity and access management, and layered security strategies. Next, we wanted to know what Mr. Lathan enjoys about the courses.

Michael especially values the supportive community and mentorship Code Black Tech provides, noting how it bridges theory with real-world application. He enjoys learning industry frameworks such as the CIA Triad, Zero Trust, and MITRE ATT&CK, and appreciates the hands-on labs that deepen his skills. Together, these courses are helping Michael build the mindset and muscle to thrive in cybersecurity and beyond. With that being said, did Mr. Lathan feel he was prepared for the rigors of the course?

To prepare for the challenge, Michael credits his foundational knowledge, discipline, and previous technical experience for helping him stay focused and engaged. The structured content, combined with a commitment to daily study and lab practice, allows Michael to meet the challenges head-on and grow confidently in his skillset. Let's switch gears -- we always ask our students to share a fun fact about themselves. Michael was quick to share this interesting fact.

A fun fact many don’t know—Michael once coached high school football as a Defensive Coordinator, where he built game plans like blue team incident response strategies, structured, adaptive, and always analyzing the opponent’s next move. Most people don’t expect a cybersecurity strategist to come from the world of playbooks and Friday night lights. Wow that is impressive!

When asked about his biggest inspiration, Michael pointed to “the old me,” meaning he survived what was meant to break him, built without resources, and kept going when no one was watching. He looks back only to honor the foundation he laid. Every move now is to become the version he dreamed of. Great words to live by. Lastly, we wanted to know what were the next steps, after graduation?

Looking ahead, Michael plans to advance in Cybersecurity and Blockchain Security, continuing his studies at MCC and then the University of Nebraska at Omaha, with the long-term goal of earning a Master’s degree in Blockchain Security.

Michael P. Lathan, Jr.'s student spotlight highlights the power of determination, mentorship, and vision—qualities that not only define his success, but also reflect the mission of Code Black Tech.
